The Flying C.

This is the lure of the moment for the salmon fisher on the River Wye. The height of the River since the start of the season has been persistently high and for the most part has prevented the salmon angler from using the fly rod with much effectiveness on Ross AC waters. So most members have turned to spinning mainly with the bait of the moment the Flying C.

These baits are no longer armed with treble hooks but have instead single hooks which are barbless or debarbed to be in line with current Environment Agency byelaws and of course easy release of the fish. The Flying C (Flying Condom) comes in all the colours you can imagine but the favourite are shown in the photo, black with silver blade or red with a copper blade.

The black with silver blade accounted today for a 22lb cock salmon at Weirend on Ross AC waters for Jon Daniels, he was spinning at Brighton Rock. Jon reports that the fish was bright silver and covered with sea lice indicating it was fresh from the sea as lice drop off after a day or so in the fresh water environment. Jon had problems with his phone camera and failed to take a photo of his fish. Fish came from Brighton Rock in 2022 for the first time in quite a few years when again Jon Daniels accounted for a 12lb salmon.

Over the weekend salmon members have hooked and lost two salmon on the Clubs Weirend beat. This shows that a significant number of salmon are running the Wye to their spawning grounds in the headwaters of the catchment.
