SALMON ANGLING AT ROSS ON WYE AC.
Ross on Wye Angling Club have 5 miles of fishing on the beautiful River Wye with 30 named pools on the estate of the Duchy of Cornwall both above and below the historic town of Ross on Wye in rural Herefordshire.
The waters, some of which were fished by Robert Pashley often called “The Wizard of the Wye”, are suitable for both spinning and for the fly.
A well appointed salmon hut is available to members with both power and water laid on for making hot drinks and a picnic table overlooking the River makes a pleasant place for a break in fishing at any time. Boats are available for the use of members.
We are a friendly club and there are membership opportunities available up to a maximum number of salmon members as determined by the Clubs Management Committee. We have waiting list but prospective members do stand a good chance of acceptance in the year of their first application.
Membership fees can be seen on the Membership page of this website. Our membership fees are fantastic value when compared with other salmon fishing on the Wye which can be as high as £60 for a SINGLE day’s salmon fishing.
Ross AC members can fish every day of week and are NOT restricted to one day a week as they are on other Wye beats. Our waters are situated between Backney beat upstream and Goodrich Court. Included in this is much of the water fished by Robert Pashley, “The Wizard of the Wye”. Considered best as a spring salmon fishery with prime fishing in the early months of the season.
Nobody could argue these days that the salmon fishing on the Wye is anything but a shadow of its former self but for the committed and determined angler there are still excellent fishing opportunities available in Ross AC waters especially during the early months of the season. Ross AC members have taken 20lb plus fish every year since 2015 with the exception of the Covid years of 2020 and 2021.
Notable fish in recent years 2019 – 30.5lb, 2015 – 28lb, 2022 – 25lb, etc etc. In recent seasons 2016 was the best year with 44 salmon. 2017 we recorded 22 salmon and 2015 was another excellent year with 20 salmon which included the first fish on the Wye of the 2015 season. It is not all spinning on Ross waters either, as recently as 2014 all the salmon in that year came to the fly.
